Gauteng govt boosts quarterly spend by R500m
The Gauteng provincial government (GPG) boosted its spending by R500-million to R18.6-billion during the first quarter of the 2013/14 financial year on the back of increased spending by the departments of Education, Community Safety and Social Development.
Finance MEC Mandla Nkomfe, presenting the Gauteng Provincial Treasury’s GPG State of Finances report for the first quarter, said that the province also generated revenue of R998.9-million, which was 25.15% of the R3.97-billion projection for the year.
The revenue generated for the period – R165.5-million more than the collected revenue during the same period last year – was driven by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, followed the Gauteng's departments of Economic Development and Health, as well as the Gauteng Provincial Treasury.
“The provincial treasury continues to work with GPG departments to ensure own revenue optimisation. The approved GPG own revenue enhancement strategy is aimed at assisting departments improve revenue collection and management while the Own Revenue Forum Charter will, amongst others, assist in ensuring accountability over implementation of decisions made in this platform,” Nkomfe said in a statement.
