Gauteng allocates further funding for job creation
The Gauteng Treasury has allocated more than R5.5-million to six Gauteng government departments as an incentive to bolster job creation in specific sectors, as well as to pay stipends to volunteers.
The funds were allocated to the Education; Roads and Transport; Agriculture and Rural Development; Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation; and Infrastructure Development departments – all of which were currently implementing community projects as part of the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) in Gauteng.
The allocations were made in terms of the 2012/2013 Second Adjustment Budget presented recently to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature by Finance MEC Mandla Nkomfe.
The Treasury said in a statement that the continuation of these projects was important as they would contribute to the 196 000 EPWP jobs the province intended creating during the 2013/2014 financial year.
Meanwhile, the provincial Education Department had been allocated an additional R110-million to cater for costs related to the building and refurbishment of school infrastructure to increase access to education in the province.
These infrastructure projects were at an advanced stage and the funds would be used to ensure that work continued on site until they were completed.
According to the Gauteng's Treasury’s third-quarter revenue and expenditure report, the Education Department’s infrastructure portfolio recorded the highest expenditure of all departments in the province to date, having spent more than R1.1-billion.
