Name of the Project
Garob Wind Farm.

Location
Near the town of Copperton, which is part of the Siyathemba local municipality, in South Africa’s Northern Cape province.

Project Owner/s
Enel subsidiary Enel Green Power RSA (EGP RSA).

Project Description
The 145 MW Garob project was awarded to EGP RSA in April 2015 during the fourth bidding window of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.

The 46-turbine wind farm is expected to generate about 573 GWh/y, avoiding about 600 000 t/y of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.

Potential Job Creation
During the construction period, EGP assisted the nearby communities with material for making furniture, personal protective equipment, blankets, food parcels, tablets for school students, university scholarships and sponsorships for local sports events.

Now that Garob is operational, Enel Green Power will launch enterprise development initiatives, including assisting startups in the agro-, bio- and food technology fields, and clean water and WiFi access initiatives.

Capital Expenditure
The project involves capital expenditure of more than €200-million.

Planned Start/End Date
Construction of the wind farm started in April 2019; it reached commercial operation in December 2021.

Latest Developments
The Garob Wind Farm has successfully started commercial operations.

Construction included the on-site building of concrete towers instead of prefabricated steel towers, with the work completed by local contractors.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
None stated.
