Name and Location
Garob Wind Farm project, Northern Cape, South Africa.

Client
Global energy group juwi Renewable Energy first approached the Garob landowners in June 2011 to negotiate and secure development rights. A met mast was installed the same year to record the meteorological conditions necessary for accurate development. The remainder of prebid development took place from 2012 to 2014.

For Round 4 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), juwi approached Italian utility company Enel Green Power (EGP), and a deal was negotiated whereby EGP would take ownership of the project when the project was awarded preferred bidder status. The project was submitted in August 2014, with EGP taking 60% of the equity, Khana 30% and the Garob local community trust 10%.

Project Description
The Garob Wind Farm, located near the old mining town of Copperton, in the Northern Cape, was recently announced as a preferred bidder in the fourth round of the Department of Energy’s REIPPPP.

The 5 500 ha site will accommodate 46 wind turbines, reaching 162 m from the ground to the tips of the blade, with an overall maximum export capacity of 140 MW.
