Lonehill residents will soon join the “fibrehood” trend sweeping across Gauteng’s affluent suburbs as telecommunications giant MTN deploys fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) and fibre-to-the-business (FTTB) in a phased approach, said Lonehill Residents Association (LRA) chairperson John Siddall on Thursday.

The first phase of the fibre roll-out would see 133 homes and businesses over a 7.5 km stretch in Lonehill connected to a 100 Mb/s fibre broadband network within two months.

More than 3 000 homes would eventually be connected to the network that MTN would build and maintain at its own cost, with the establishment of a dedicated 24-hour FTTH centre to provide support services to MTN customers.

“FTTH will transform how we work and play. This fibre network will ensure that businesses can improve their efficiency and optimally use technologies such as video conferencing,” said Siddall.

The high-speed network would enable residents to stream high-definition videos and music videos, play online games and stream movies.

It would also enable LRA to connect its close circuit television, adding “another layer of security” for Lonehill residents.

The 24-month contract packages on offer included MTN Supersonic, which was priced from R794 a month and included installation, devices and 20 GB of data at 20 Mb/s, as well as a 50 Mb/s offering with 50 GB of data at R1 014 a month.

Also available was a 100 Mb/s, 100 GB of data solution at R1 389 a month.

MTN also provided a month-to-month offering for the customers not wanting to enter a long-term contract.

The customer would be required to pay a R3 000 one-off installation fee, with packages priced from R669 a month for 20 Mb/s.
