Four new directors appointed to SAPO board
Four new directors have been appointed to the board of the South African Post Office (SAPO) replacing those who retired in the aftermath of former Communications Minister Dina Pule’s controversial tenure.
The new directors comprised South African Institute of Professional Accountants CEO Sathie Gounden, senior lawyer and High Court judge Templeton Mageza, information technology (IT) specialist and IT firm Sizavox local MD Sihle Ngubane and Adrenna Property Group board member and audit committee chairperson Boitumelo Mothelesi.
The SAPO had been riddled by debilitating corruption amounting to billions over the last decade and new Communications Minister Yunus Carrim had made it clear that his main priority as government representative was cleaning up this mess.
President Jacob Zuma had also earlier this month signed a proclamation directing the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate allegations of “serious” maladministration by the SAPO, improper or unlawful conduct by SAPO officials and unlawful appropriation or expenditure of public money.
Investigations would also be made into the management of immovable property, the implementation of the WebRipost system, as well as loans granted to logistics subsidiary Courier & Freight Group.
“The SIU will further investigate allegations of irregularities relating to the recruitment, selection and appointment of officials or employees of the SAPO, as well as payments which were made by the SAPO to fictitious officials or employees,” the Presidency said in a statement.
Mageza on Friday said the new board members were “happy to assist government with its ongoing efforts to lift the efficacy of State-owned enterprises including [the] SAPO.”
