PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Iron-ore major Fortescue Metals has reported record shipments during the three months to December, with the miner pushing 28-million tonnes of ore through port.

This was despite a three-day shutdown caused by Tropical Cyclone Christine at the end of December.

Fortescue produced 32-million tonnes of ore, which was down on the 34.9-million tonnes produced in the period ended September, which was the first quarter of the financial year, as the company aligned production with its current processing rates.

The combined output from the company’s ore processing facilities (OPF) during the December quarter increased by 25% quarter-on-quarter, and by 67% year-on-year.

Construction of the Kings OPF was completed in October, and first ore was processed through the plant in November. Fortescue said the ramp-up was continuing with full production expected by the March quarter.

During the quarter, the OPF output was impacted by delays in the ramp-up, as well as engineering modifications and the step-in at the Christmas Creek mine.

Fortescue reported that it was on track to reach its 155-million-tonne-a-year production target during March this year, with the ramp-up of the Kings OPF and full production from the Chichester hub.

Total ore shipments for the 2014 financial year to the end of June were estimated to be around 127-million tonnes, towards the lower end of the previous guidance, as a result of the significant weather impacts experienced in January, material handing issues affecting the ramp-up of the OPF, and the assumption of operational management at the Christmas Creek OPF.
