The total costs incurred by the Department of Communications in respect of legal fees related to axed former Communications Minister Dina Pule, thus far, amount to nearly R1.2-million.

New Communications Minister Yunus Carrim outlined in a written response to a Parliamentary question by Democratic Alliance Member of Parliament (MP) Marian Shinn that these costs included those related to a case brought by the former Minister against the Sunday Times, which she accused of unethical behaviour.

The case was later dismissed by the Press Ombudsman.

Carrim said the total costs also included legal or other fees spent by the department on investigations into Pule’s conduct by Parliament’s Joint Ethics Committee and by the Public Protector following allegations that she had awarded a R6-million departmental contract to boyfriend Phosane Mngqibisa.

Further costs might have to be added to the total, with Carrim noting that, “Some legal costs are still payable but are unknown at this stage.”

Following Pule’s axing as Minister on July 9, the ethics committee found her guilty of breaching the code of conduct for MPs, handing her the maximum penalty of a reprimand by speaker Max Sisulu during a sitting of the house.

She was also fined the equivalent of 30 days' salary, her privileges were suspended for 15 days, and she was excluded from any Parliamentary debates or committees during that period.
