While government and the mining industry forge ahead with initiatives to make the industry safer, individuals responsible for the implementation of health and safety within companies need to keep abreast of ever-changing compliance requirements, notes Sand Producers Association of Southern Africa (Aspasa) director Nico Pienaar.

As a result, Aspasa will host a series of workshops in the country to assist organisations in the quarrying and related mining industries to meet compliance requirements.

The latest workshop was hosted by industry expert Cecil Naude on March 26 in Gauteng. Pienaar notes that legal compliance is non-negotiable and knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations is critical to enable the correct interpretation of the law.

“We want delegates who complete the course to apply the newly acquired knowledge of legal principles effectively within their organisation and improve the organisation’s understanding and handling of the law,” he says.

The course covers relevant infor- mation and provides advice on the implementation and interpretation of laws including the Mine Health & Safety Act No 29, 1996, and the duties of the employer, the CEO and employees, as well as those of manufacturers and suppliers.
