The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has selected five candidates to proceed to the second round of consultations in the selection of a successor to outgoing director-general Pascal Lamy.

These are Mari Elka Pangestu, from Indonesia, Tim Groser, from New Zealand, Herminio Blanco, from Mexico, Taeho Bark, from the Republic of Korea, and Roberto Carvalho de Azevêdo, from Brazil.

The consultations, which will run from April 16 to 24, follow the first round of consultations, which eliminated four candidates.

All 159 WTO members are involved in the selection process by submitting their candidate preferences.

Three candidates will be expected to withdraw in the second round, leaving two candidates in the final round.

“The outcome of the consultations will be reported to all members at an open-ended meeting of heads of delegation to be held as soon as possible following the conclusion of the process,” commented Lamy.
