Communications Minister Faith Muthambi will distribute the first batch of government-subsidised set-top boxes (STBs) to the community of Keimoes and Kai Garib, in Northern Cape, on December 17.

This would mark the first installation of STBs in South Africa since the digital terrestrial television policy was gazetted in March.

STBs would decode digital signals for analogue television sets when South Africa made its broadcast switchover. Government would subsidise the decoders for five-million poor households across the country.

Government would distribute 23 000 STBs to the community situated in the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope area, as analogue television transmissions interfered with signals received by the SKA, which meant that a compulsory switchover in the area was needed.

Over 2 400 households in the area have registered to receive STBs, with the registration process kick-started by Muthambi in October.

“Television viewing experience will never be the same for many [of these] households,” the Minister said.
