JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – African coal explorer Edenville Energy on Monday announced positive results from the first set of detailed coal sampling and testwork at its Rukwa coal project’s Namwele deposit, in western Tanzania, indicating that the deposit had the potential to provide significantly higher quality coal and a higher washed yield than previously modelled.

Over the past three months, test pits were dug to a depth of about 3 m at Rukwa’s Namwele, Mkomolo and Muze deposits, and the samples analysed for quality.

Edenville said the results of the Namwele testwork indicated the availability of high-quality, near surface coal.

“[The results] could improve the technical and economic parameters for the coal-to-power development and also forms the basis for a detailed investigation into potential coal sales to the regional market,” Edenville CEO Rufus Short said.

He added that testwork on the Mkomolo and Muze deposits was well under way with further results expected to be announced by the end of this year.
