First phase of Botshabelo industrial park revamp nears completion
The R24-million first phase of the Botshabelo Industrial Park upgrade was nearing completion, with the revamp already attracting increased confidence from potential investors and boosting potential employment creation.
The Free State-based park was one of the industrial parks prioritised for revitalisation during the first phase of the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI’s) Revitalisation of Industrial Parks Programme, said Free State Development Corporation core operations divisional executive Grace Shaba.
The revitalisation programme was aimed at upgrading ten of South Africa’s State-owned industrial parks to stimulate broader economic and industrial development in the host townships and rural areas, while attracting investments, enabling job creation and addressing inequality and eradicating poverty.
“Before the project is [even] completed, we are experiencing its positive impact as a result of the significant difference it is making to the image and infrastructure of the park,” Shaba commented in a statement on Tuesday.
“The safe environment that the security upgrade has created in the park has encouraged companies to consider investing more in their businesses in order to grow them.”
Further, the park’s occupancy rate increased to 90% since the upgrades started earlier this year, with the businesses housed inside the park employing some 9 500 people.
“More companies are showing an interest in locating their businesses in the park and that is evidence of the positive impact of the upgrading of the park,” she added.
The Free State Development Corporation and government agencies such as the Small Enterprise Development Agency were providing financial and nonfinancial support to the small businesses and cooperatives located in the park.
