FibreCo builds skills capacity as fibre-optic network develops
Information and communications technology group FibreCo Telecommunications remained on track to build fibre-related skills and capacity in South Africa as it developed its long-distance fibre-optic network.
FibreCo had trained 30 candidates in Bloemfontein after kicking off the R5-billion, three-phase, 12 000 km, high-speed, open-access, long-haul fibre-optic network project in 2012
The Fibre Optic Association-accredited programme had now extended to 20 candidates in East London, where the company had completed the first 2 000 km of the high-speed network.
As the group moved to expand the network from East London to Durban and Cape Town, more candidates would be selected for training along the route to ensure skills were localised, said FibreCo CEO Arif Hussain.
This would prevent long downtimes while attempting to secure suitably skilled technicians to travel long distances to the source of the breakage.
“The primary focus of the course is to provide a comprehensive coverage of the best practices for the deployment of optical communication networks,” explained Hussain.
This included hands-on training of optical fibre installation, fusion and mechanical splicing, connectorisation, acceptance testing and troubleshooting.
Besides fibre-optic technical training, the broad curriculum included financial management and entrepreneurial skills, as well as health and safety, to better prepare the candidates for entrepreneurship opportunities, as well as to apply for new job opportunities in the operation and maintenance of fibre networks.
FibreCo said it aimed to absorb some of the successful candidates into the operations and maintenance of its network.
The company planned to broadly train at least 200 technicians around the country, in communities close to where its network was located.
