JOHANNESBURG – A mineworker has been killed in a fall of ground incident at AngloGold Ashanti’s TauTona Mine in western Gauteng, the company said on Sunday.

“AngloGold Ashanti regrets to announce the death of an employee at its TauTona Mine in the Carletonville area. The deceased, a meshing & lacing assistant, was fatally injured in a seismic-related fall of ground incident on Wednesday,” it said in a statement.

Management initiated a targeted stand-down on flat development ends to assess primary and secondary support compliance and quality, as well as safe declaration compliance.

The mineral resources department investigated the incident on Thursday with the TauTona management, along with unions and associations, and confirmed the management actions initiated.

“AngloGold Ashanti would like to express its sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. Management is working with the employee’s family to assist them through this difficult time.”
