Resources company Exxaro’s Inyanda mine launched an education intervention pro- gramme in March to improve the quality of education in labour-sending communities.

The project was officially launched by eMalahleni mayor Salome Sithole and Iyanda mine business unit manager Lazarus Ramashilabele at Pine Ridge Combined School, where extra classes will be provided for Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners on Saturdays and during school holidays.

This programme aims to improve the pass rate of students in eMalahleni’s Klarinet community, with the focus being on maths, science, English and life orientation, and forms part of Inyanda’s social and labour plan.

This initiative will also assist in providing a steady throughput of local learners suitable for Exxaro’s bursary and artisan programmes.

The project was initiated with the assist-ance of the Department of Basic Education. A strict screening process has ensured that selected teachers are competent in their field and can successfully transfer knowledge.

Exxaro takes a holistic approach to the pro- gramme and provides teachers with teaching aids, study materials, a science laboratory, transportation and nutrition.

The Klarinet community will also benefit from this initiative, as local suppliers are used to provide supporting services, resulting in six new jobs having been created.

“Education and skills development is a priority in South Africa, given the on-going shortage of skills and the poor quality of pub- lic education. Exxaro believes that the contri-butions of the private sector will make a big difference in providing individuals with the opportunity to reach their full potential,” says Ramashilabele.
