JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – JSE-listed Exxaro on Wednesday afternoon confirmed that no progress had been made in ending the illegal strikes at its coal operations, but that the diversified miner and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) continued to engage to find a solution.

The parties failed to resolve the issues, as Exxaro refused to set a precedent in buckling to the demands of striking workers, while the workers vowed not to return to work until they were paid a performance bonus, the NUM said earlier on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the company squashed concerns that coal supply to the power stations its mines serve would dry up as a result of the continuing strike.

Exxaro was contracted to supply Eskom’s Matimba, Arnot and Matla power stations with coal.

The company confirmed that its Grootegeluk coal mine, which supplied the Matimba power station, held 40 days of coal stock, while its Arnot coal mine had over a month’s supply. Coal supply at the Matla mine was being calculated.

This contradicted Solidarity’s statement on Tuesday that Grootegeluk only had four days supply of coal.

Exxaro reiterated that contingency measures for supply were in place and that the group continued to work closely with the power utility to ensure the availability of coal supply.
