On April 8 Dr Steve Mackay Dean of Engineering at Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT) is presenting a seminar in Cape Town on Practical Engineering for the Future - using Automation and Renewables as the Key Drivers.

This is Mackay’s second seminar in South Africa in 2022, following a similar seminar in Midrand, Johannesburg at the EIT offices in South Africa on 25 March.

The seminar marked Mackay’s return to South Africa following Covid-19 travel restrictions. During that time EIT has been able to grow rapidly due to the offering of Australian accredited engineering education for international students.

The helm at EIT’s main campus in Perth, Western Australia, Mackay has been working closely with the South African office to ensure the organization grows not only interest in engineering but provides South Africans with access to engineering education from certificates up to a Doctor of Engineering degree.

Since his last visit to South Africa, the local office managed to grow its team from 10 to 26 employees as a direct response to meeting the needs of students in Africa and the rest of the world.

The South African office is home to several Learning Support Officers and Course Advisors that act as a port of call for students during their time with EIT.

Students now have access to six Course Advisors, seven Learning Support Officers and a full-time lecturer that heads the Bachelor of Science degrees offered by EIT in South Africa.

Mackay leads the institute in providing micro-credentials and engineering qualifications to over 2000 students per year from 140 countries. He has an unswerving focus on student outcomes and excellence in education.

The Seminar

In the seminar, Mackay will detail ways to apply sustainability and automation to your engineering projects – in the areas of electrical, mechanical, civil, and industrial automation engineering - as applied to such diverse areas as mining, infrastructure, construction, defence, energy, water, transport, medical, manufacturing, and consultancy.

Steve will highlight how the significant growth in climate change engineering, the drive for sustainability, cost efficiencies, and automation may impact your work.

In a lively debate, he will call on you (and your fellow attendees) to share your perspective on the future of engineering in South Africa.

Finally - in small groups - you will be tasked with outlining your team’s approach to a practical engineering project that will be given to you.

Judging by our past events, this is a must-attend event for engineering professionals and aspiring engineers alike. It will be an opportunity to hear from a respected industry leader and to network with like-minded people – many of whom will have experience in automation and renewables.

Agenda

  1. Welcome to you.
  2. A discussion: Practical Engineering for the Future
  3. Teamwork (in small groups) – solving an engineering challenge.
  4. Feedback and debate.
  5. Networking over coffee/tea and snacks.

Who is EIT?

The Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT) provides practical education and training in engineering and technology, with most graduates in fulfilling and well-paid engineering jobs.

EIT offers excellence across its professional development courses, and in its Australian internationally accredited diplomas and advanced diplomas, bachelor's and master's degrees, and a professional Doctor of Engineering. The engineering lecturers and instructors, most with considerable industry experience and a passion for teaching, are drawn from around the world.

The live and interactive online platform of learning (with access to remote and virtual labs) reaches students in over 160 countries.

The degrees are also available on campus in Australia, using a blended approach to learning.
