Energy utility Eskom on Monday warned that the national electricity system would be “extremely tight” over the next three days, and called on consumers to reduce their electricity use as the parastatal continues with planned maintenance on its generating units.

Eskom reported in its biweekly system status bulletin that it anticipated a significant increase in electricity demand as businesses and schools reopened after the December holidays.

“We appeal for sustained savings throughout the day to reduce demand on the electricity grid. Users are urged to pull together over the next few months and use electricity sparingly,” said the utility.

The capacity available to meet Monday evening’s peak demand was 31 200 MW, including the power provided by Eskom’s open-cycle gas turbines, while demand was forecast at 30 589 MW.

Current planned maintenance stood at 5 000 MW, while unplanned outages were 6 200 MW.

Peak demand for the rest of the week was forecast at 30 907 MW on Tuesday, 30 887 MW on Wednesday, 30 873 MW on Thursday, 30 622 MW on Friday, 28 963 MW on Saturday and 28 386 MW on Sunday.
