Power utility Eskom is planning to accelerate the roll-out of prepaid meters in Soweto after its revenue collection in the area improved by R39-million from the start of the 2014/15 financial year to June 30 as a result of the installation of split prepaid meters.

Soweto has about 181 000 customers, 65% of whom use conventionally billed metering systems and the remainder conventional prepaid metering systems.

Eskom has already installed more than 41 628 split meters and converted 24 746 to prepaid.

The utility is also installing prepaid meters in Sandton, Midrand, Kagiso and other areas in Gauteng to improve revenue collection and deal with debt collection challenges.

In Sandton and Midrand, it has connected nearly 14 700 meters from March to date as part of its goal to install 32 000 prepaid meters in these areas by the end of March 2017.
