Eskom not impacted by NUM strike
The National Union of Mineworkers’ (NUM’s) unprotected strike has not impacted on State-owned Eskom’s operations, the power utility assured the public on Thursday.
Deadlocked wage talks led to employees downing tools at three of Eskom’s power stations on Monday.
However, more than 45 000 of Eskom’s 47 000-strong workforce have been reporting for duty since the start of what the utility declared an illegal strike.
“The majority of our employees are at work, ensuring that our operations continue as normal,” it said in a statement.
Eskom stated that its workforce was prohibited from participating in any form of industrial action or any action that obstructs Eskom’s operations, as it is deemed an essential service.
“Any such industrial action that may occur is unprotected. Therefore, any employee that participates in such action would be carrying out an act of misconduct, and disciplinary action will be instituted against him/her,” Eskom warned.
The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration is currently facilitating the wage negotiations between the parastatal and trade unions NUM, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa and Solidarity.
Eskom is offering a wage hike of between 7% and 9%, falling short of the unions’ demands of a wage increase of between 12% and 13%.
“The wage negotiations . . . continue today. Eskom is hopeful that an amicable settlement will be reached soon.”
