While construction workers had not returned to the Medupi site by Friday morning, Eskom had appealed to its contractors to mobilise its workers in an effort to resume normal operations.

Eskom spokesperson Hilary Joffe told Engineering News Online that an incident of stone throwing on Thursday had resulted in several arrests.

On Thursday afternoon, Eskom reopened the site following several days of a worker lock-out owing to safety concerns following the injury of 25 workers during illegal protest action on Wednesday last week.

While construction timelines remained unchanged, Joffe said any labour disruption posed a serious threat to the project's tight schedule and could impact on Medupi's ability to meet its power generation deadline.

The power station’s first unit is expected to generate first power to South Africa’s national grid by the end of this year.
