JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Uranium miner Energy Resources (ERA) of Australia on Monday moved to calm fears over a radioactive leak at its Ranger mine, in the Northern Territory. However, its stock took a dive on the news that a leach tank had failed over the weekend, causing a mixture of slurry to escape.

ERA reported that the slurry had moved outside the bunded containment area, but was captured and contained on site. All personnel were removed from the site and the nearby area before the tank failed and the mixture escaped.

As the material was contained in the processing area, there was no impact on the environment surrounding the Ranger project. The company was confident that the Kakadu National Park would not be impacted by the incident. No personnel were injured during the toxic spill.

The ASX-listed miner said that all processing operations have now ceased and clean-up operations were advanced, with water monitoring points at the Ranger mine and the surrounding areas reporting normal readings.

The company has launched a full investigation into the incident, and was also assessing the impact of the incident on operations, including the duration of time for which processing would remain closed, the nature and extent of the repair works required, and the impact on production.

Preliminary estimations were that there would be no material impact on the 2013 production and guidance, and Ranger was expected to produce between 2 800 t and 3 200 of uranium product during this period.

Shares fell by nearly 13% on Monday to trade at A$1.135 apiece.
