The staff and legal entities of Engen Petroleum Burundi SA and SEP have rushed to the aid of the flood victims of Bujumbura, pooling contributions towards relief activities carried out by the Red Cross.

The spontaneous outpouring of Ubuntu comes after catastrophic floods on the weekend of 9 February laid waste to the impoverished northern suburbs of the capital Bujumbura, killing 100 and destroying 1000 homes to leave 12 000 people without shelter.

Jean Marie Uwihanganye, managing director of Engen Petroleum Burundi, says the gesture goes out to families of the deceased, mainly children, and other victims of the floods who have lost their homes and livelihoods.

In the horror, she adds, some of the devastation is less obvious. Bujumbura is the largest city and main port of Burundi. There have been major landslides and destruction of bridges, affecting transport to the city as well as import and distribution of fuels and goods into the country.

“In this context, in support of the government’s request for assistance, we will contribute an additional 20 000 litres of fuel [worth US$ 25 000] to help power vehicles doing road repairs.”

Uwihanganye says staff was roundly shocked by the devastation. “Our hearts go out to the people of Burundi, and we can only hope our support will help alleviate some of the suffering and loss.”

Engen handed over its financial contribution to the Red Cross on Saturday, February 15th.  The donation will go directly towards supporting flood victims and the volunteers who support them. The Red Cross will buy hygiene kits, kitchen sets and help to build emergency facilities.
