Energy will remain an apex priority for the ANC, President Jacob Zuma said on Saturday.

Zuma made reference to the power shortfall facing the country in the ANC National Executive Committee's annual January 8 statement at the party's 103rd anniversary celebrations at the Cape Town Stadium.

"Our country needs creative and pragmatic solutions to this problem to guarantee security of supply for our energy needs," he said.

"In line with the recommendations of the National Development Plan, the ANC government is accelerating the pace to bring the Medupi and Kusile power stations onto the grid and we are licensing the Independent Power Producers."

In recent weeks, power utility Eskom has battled to keep the lights on.

On December 5, Eskom implemented stage three "load shedding". Stage one allows for up to 1000 MW of the national load to be shed, stage two for up to 2000 MW, and stage three for up to 4 000 MW.

On December 8, Eskom CEO Tshediso Matona denied that the state utility was in a crisis.
