TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – TSX- and LSE-listed EMED Mining on Wednesday said it still expected to receive final permitting for the brownfield Rio Tinto mine, in Andalucia, Spain, before year-end, despite the regulatory deadline for this being extended by another three months.

The Junta de Andalucía, the institution that currently organised the self-government of the Autonomous Community of Andalusia, had given itself more time to consider the mine’s mining permit.

EMED noted that this would allow the Junta additional time to complete the complex administrative process related to the final permits and did not affect the latest schedule for the project.

Following approval of the final restoration plan and the mining permit, the company would be fully permitted to enable full-scale mining and processing operations to start.

EMED pointed out that all activities at the site were advancing at a normal pace with the goal of starting wet plant commissioning during the third quarter of 2015.

The Rio Tinto mine gave global conglomerate Rio Tinto its name. The mining giant sold its majority stake in the 1950s and the remainder in later years. The mine was shuttered in 2001, when copper prices were deemed unprofitable, until EMED took an option in the project and, later, gained ownership.
