Railway systems and equipment company Alstom is investing €14-million in driverless transport startup company EasyMile, which is developing the EZ10 electric driverless shuttle.

The investment represents a minority stake for Alstom in EasyMile and forms part of EasyMile’s ongoing capital increase.

Alstom and EasyMile have signed a commercial partnership agreement to provide integrated solutions for urban transport. As part of the agreement, Alstom will be present on EasyMile’s board committee.

The EZ10 can accommodate 12 passengers and provides shared driverless transport for the so-called “last mile” – from a transport hub to a final destination within a precinct or confined area.

Since April 2015, the EZ10 has been deployed at more than 50 sites in 14 countries in Asia, North America, the Middle East and Europe. Experience gained and lessons learned by operating in these countries are continuously integrated into EasyMile products and solutions.

Alstom strategy head Bruno Marguet says, in line with Alstom’s 2020 strategy, the company has decided to explore adjacent businesses, especially in the context of digitalisation. “Through this investment, Alstom expands its knowledge into the driverless technologies and pursues its development in the growing field of smart mobility. We are confident in the success of the EZ10, already tested in different climates and conditions.”
