Ekurhuleni municipality to enhance green laws
Soon companies will have to adhere to stricter environmental laws as municipalities begin to look at ways in which they can become greener and contribute to making the air cleaner.
The development came to light at a seminar in Germiston on Wednesday, where delegates discussed the importance of environmental legal compliance.
Ekurhuleni’s Member of the Mayoral Committee on Environmental Resource Management Ndosi Shongwe called on “industries producing carbon emissions to adhere to strict environment laws in order to assist the municipality achieve clean air.”
Shongwe said the 2014 findings by the National Air Quality indicated that Ekurhuleni was the city with the “worst air pollution”.
Addressing delegates, Shongwe said: “The findings are an unwelcome poor image on our part and we need you as industries to join hands with us to significantly reduce carbon emissions. One of our priorities is to create a clean and green city and the issue of gas emissions becomes critical”.
She said the City was working to address this challenge and as part of its response strategy, a specialised unit, the Legal Compliance was established.
The unit will assist industries obtain Atmospheric Emission Licenses and providing guidelines on how to comply with set emission limits.
Shongwe said the Legal Compliance unit was also responsible for monitoring the industrial community through spot checks and ensuring compliance of the municipal bylaws.
She said companies need to be “mindful of the health risk of pollution to our people” and the greener municipal bylaws would “see an amendment to some laws that govern harmful emissions”.
Shongwe said these greener bylaws would go a long way in ensuring companies complied with environmental standards designated to protect the environment.
