Edikan mine, Ghana
Name of the Mine
Edikan mine.
Location
The Edikan mine is located in Ghana's Central region, within the Asankrangwa goldbelt.
Mine Owner/s
Edikan is 90% owned by Perseus Mining through its Ghanaian subsidiaries, with the remaining 10% held by the government of Ghana as a free-carried interest.
Brief Description
Edikan is Perseus Mining's first operating mine and a large-scale, multideposit openpit gold operation. Since commercial production started in 2012, the mine has produced more than two-million ounces of gold.
The operation includes several active pits and a processing facility that treats a blend of oxide and fresh ore. The mine has consistently contributed to Perseus' production base and supported growth across the group. Edikan has a mine life of more than five years.
Brief History
Edikan poured first gold in 2011 and achieved commercial production in early 2012. Over the years, Perseus has expanded the operation through the development of additional pits and, more recently, by incorporating the Esuajah South underground deposit into its life-of-mine plan.
Primary Metals/Minerals
Gold.
Secondary Metals/Minerals
None stated.
Geology/Mineralisation
The mine is hosted within the Palaeoproterozoic Birimian Supergroup and spans multiple deposits, including AF Gap, Esuajah North, Fetish, Bokitsi, and Esuajah South. Gold mineralisation is structurally controlled and occurs in sheared volcanic and sedimentary rocks, with quartz veins and disseminated sulphides being the main hosts. The Esuajah South deposit, now developed for underground mining, represents a higher-grade zone within this system.
Reserves
As at June 30, 2024, Edikan had total reserves of 25.4-million tonnes at 1.11 g/t, containing 880 000 oz of gold.
Resources
As at June 30, 2024, the measured and indicated mineral resources were reported at 51.5-million tonnes at 1.04 g/t, containing 1.73-million ounces of gold.
Type of Mine
Openpit with an underground component at Esuajah South.
Mining Method
Conventional openpit mining using drill, blast, load and haul methods is applied across all surface deposits. Underground mining at Esuajah South is being developed using sublevel open stoping with paste fill.
Major Infrastructure/Equipment
The operation includes a modern eight-million-tonne-a-year processing plant with crushing, grinding, carbon-in-leach and elution circuits. Other key infrastructure includes tailings storage facilities, administration offices, workshops, accommodation, haul roads, and access to grid power, supplemented by diesel backup. Water is sourced from local catchments.
Prospects
Edikan remains a key contributor to Perseus' production profile. While output is less than Perseus’ other operations, the incorporation of the Esuajah South underground mine provides access to higher-grade ore and extends mine life. Ongoing exploration within the project area continues to assess the potential for near-mine resource additions.
