Platinum producer Northam Platinum has announced the appointment of Paul Dunne as CEO of the company with effect from March 1.

Dunne, previously an executive director of platinum miner Impala Platinum, replaces current Northam CEO Glyn Lewis, who has decided to accelerate his retirement plans.

To ensure a smooth transition, Lewis will remain an employee of Northam until June 30, when his employment contract expires.

Lewis joined Northam in 2001 as manager of the company’s Zondereinde division, in Limpopo, and was appointed CEO in 2005. During his tenure, the geologically challenging and technically difficult operation at Zondereinde was placed on a stable and sustainable footing.

“Decline access to 2 300 m below shaft collar is being developed, where new levels to access conformable Merensky reef reserves will progressively become available for mining,” the company added.

Meanwhile, also during Lewis’s term, the Booysendal project, in Mpumalanga, was commissioned on June 30, 2013, on schedule and within budget, and was currently being ramped up to its design capacity of 150 000 t/m milled.

Northam’s directors thanked Lewis for his outstanding service to the company and for pro- actively ensuring that Dunne’s transition to CEO would be smooth.
