DTI to lead export trade mission to Brazil
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) will lead a delegation of South African business representatives on an outward-selling mission to São Paulo, Brazil, with the aim of increasing exports of South African agroprocessing products and promoting the country as a trade and investment destination in high-growth markets.
Trade and Industry Minister Dr Rob Davies said in a statement that the July 15 to 19 mission would focus mainly on promoting local agroprocessing in relation to fruit juice, wine and rooibos.
“This sector received significant interest during the Investment and Trade Initiative events held in Brazil in March and October last year. As much as Brazil and South Africa are direct competitors on some products in agroprocessing, there are opportunities for South Africa-specific products that have a competitive advantage over domestic Brazilian brands,” he commented.
Davies added that, based on competitive offerings for a number of select South African products, there was considerable potential for the future expansion of the agroprocessing sector in the Brazilian market.
“The medium- to high-end market of South African wines in Brazil is growing, which is a result of the quality advantage that local wine has over the Brazilian product. This also justifies a higher price,” he said.
In 2012, Brazil was South Africa’s 27th most prolific export partner, and was ranked South Africa’s 15th most important import partner.
Bilateral trade between South Africa and Brazil amounted to R20.2-billion in 2012, which was 2.7% higher than in 2011.
