DTI to consult industry on national export strategy
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Thursday said it would manage several provincial workshops to engage with industry about updating the country’s national export strategy.
The first workshop would start in Durban on Monday, February 11, and would culminate in a national workshop, in Gauteng, in March.
Trade and Industry Minister Dr Rob Davies said the stakeholder engagement process was a critical initiative aimed at soliciting views, opinions and strategic inputs from various role-players.
The workshops would also allow provincial government structures to share export plans, programmes and strategies to create a synergised national export approach.
“In essence, a national export strategy looks into the competitiveness and development of a country’s export sector and identifies priorities for enhanced export performance,” said Davies.
He added that a key strategic objective of the department was to build mutually beneficial regional and global relations to advance South Africa’s trade, industrial policy and economic development objectives.
“We are also mandated to expand the country’s export base by increasing the number of exporters and assisting companies to increase exports of locally manufactured products and services,” he said.
The need to review and develop a streamlined approach to export development and promotion was in line with global best practice and the country’s latest economic policy developments.
Existing policies, such as the Industrial Policy Action Plan, the New Growth Path, the National Development Plan and the current national export strategy would be reviewed and updated in line with these recent policy developments, the DTI said in a statement.
The review of the strategy would consider both the private and public sectors, including State-owned entities and would include all work done by various national and provincial government departments and their agencies.
