A Shosholoza Meyl passenger train has collided head-on with a goods train near Hanover outside King William’s Town.

Emergency services personnel are currently at the scene‚ trying to free 25 people who are trapped.

The extent of injuries and whether there are fatalities are not yet known.

It is believed the goods train was travelling in the direction of East London and the passenger train in the opposite direction.

It is not clear why the trains were on the same track.

At the scene are about 20 ambulances from Emergency Medical Services (EMS)‚ Aldersons and Dynamic‚ and five fire trucks.
