Domestic new-vehicle sales, exports record m/m increase in May

Domestic new-vehicle sales increased by 7.6% month-on-month to 47 868 units in May, compared with the 44 503 units sold in April, statistics released by the Department of Trade and Industry on Monday have revealed.

Vehicle sales were, however, 3.2% lower than the 49 449 units sold in May 2014.

Leading the market in terms of domestic sales, Toyota sold 8 043 vehicles over the month, followed by Volkswagen, at 7 564, Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa, at 6 713, and General Motors South Africa/Isuzu Trucks, which sold 4 696 units over the period.

Vehicle exports, meanwhile, increased by 41.48% to 33 411 units, compared with 23 615 units in April.

On a year-on-year basis, exports increased by 114.2%, compared with the 15 595 units exported in May 2014.
