As the commission of inquiry into the causes of the collapse in November of a section of the half-built Thongathi Mall, in KwaZulu-Natal, prepares to get under way, the Department of Labour (DoL) will send out subpoenas “as a matter of urgency” to the affected stakeholders.

The first phase of the Section-32 hearings into the series of events that left two people dead and 29 others injured after a large portion of one of the unfinished Tongaat-based shopping centre’s floors collapsed, would officially run from February 11 to 14, at the municipal offices in Thongathi.

The four-person commission, presided over by DoL occupational health and safety manager Phumudzo Maphaha, was expected to spend the next six months gathering evidence and interviewing between 20 and 50 witnesses.

The final findings and recommendations would be presented to Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant, DoL chief inspector Thobile Lamati and the Director of Public Prosecutions for their consideration.

The commission was currently consolidating the outstanding reports submitted by various stakeholders who would be expected to undergo interviews during the hearing.

Newswire Sapa had earlier reported that R2-million was expected to be spent in the commission's work over the six-month inquiry.
