Gxakra Investment (GI) consortium has acquired DMS – a producer and supplier of Ferrosilicon 15% Powders in South Africa.

Ferrosilicon producer Dense Media Separation Powder (DMSP) South Africa has assured employees of job security following the company’s takeover by  new stakeholders from previous owner Siyanda Resources.

The company also plans to improve its product offering, GI chairperson and main shareholder Mzwandile Nombewu has told Mining Weekly.

The takeover became effective on October 1.

Nombewu says that when the agreements were signed, there was a commitment by the new owners to buy the entire company and to continue employing the company’s staff members, with the conditions of employment, structures, pension contributions and other elements remaining unchanged.

Some structural changes may occur at management level and some job positions may change, but no retrenchments are planned. The company has 210 employees.

With regard to operational aspects, Nombewu says the company will continue to sell its Ferrosilicon product to its local and international clients, given that this was a going concern transaction.

Nombewu adds that the company will be looking at how it can improve its product offering, as well as new applications for its product.

Therefore, the starting point for the rest of the year will be maintaining and producing the same quality and quantity of product, and then, based on the outcomes of its research and development efforts, DMSP SA will consider what new products can be introduced into the market and what the uptake for these could be.

Given that the takeover is quite recent, Nombewu says the company will first ensure that stability is guaranteed, and then will look at longer-term growth plans that includes metallurgical powders.
