TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Canadian platinum miner Eastern Platinum (Eastplats) on Tuesday said South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) had issued more Section 54 notices at the Zandfontein section of its Crocodile River mine, forcing restricted operations.

The company said drilling continued, however, blasting and cleaning operations were on hold until certain remedial measures currently being implemented by the company had been reviewed by the DMR.

Eastplats last week resumed operations at the mine following a thorough investigation of the fatal accident that occurred at the Zandfontein section on February 5. Mining operations were suspended after shift supervisor Allan Swartz was fatally injured after falling down an empty ore pass.

Eastplats has assets on both the western and eastern limbs of South Africa’s Bushveld Igneous Complex, which holds about 80% of the world’s platinum supply.

The company’s TSX-listed shares had gained 16.67% in value since the start of the year and on Tuesday closed at 21 Canadian cents apiece.
