Diepsloot pedestrian bridge makes crossing over Juksei river safer
City of Johannesburg executive mayor Herman Mashaba and Transport MMC Nonhlanhla Makhuba on Wednesday officially opened the newly built Diepsloot pedestrian bridge.
Construction started in May 2018 and final completion is anticipated for mid-August.
The bridge is situated in Diepsloot West, Ward 95, and connects Extension 1 and 2 in Region A.
Linking the two extensions provides safe access across the Jukskei river and safe passage during heavy rains and flooding. It also provides easier access to community amenities – schools, shops and health facilities.
Johannesburg Roads Agency MD Siya Nodu said the entity was particularly concerned about the safety of children who cross the wetlands every day on their way to school.
Twenty-four local labourers and four small contractors were employed during the construction of the bridge.
Nodu said the wetland was minimally impacted during construction; however, a wetland rehabilitation plan to reinstate vegetation, is in place.
