The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) New Universities Project Management Team is reviewing submissions for the design of the Northern Cape’s first university, set to be built in Kimberley.

The project management team, which was set up by the University of the Witwatersrand, invited expressions of interest from professional architects to participate in a two-stage architectural ideas competition. The closing date for submissions was May 27.

The purpose of the competition was to encourage innovative ideas and the adoption of best practice concepts, as well as to identify talented designers to participate in the design of the university precinct.

Government last year announced that Nelspruit, in Mpumalanga, and Kimberley, in the Northern Cape, would each get one of the new universities, with National Treasury allocating more than R2-billion over the 2013/14 to 2015/16 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework period for their development.

The DHET has also invited submissions of interest for the design of the planned university in Nelspruit to be made by June 20.
