Department to hand over draft water master plan in October
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has until the second week of October to submit a draft National Water and Sanitation Master Plan to the Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation.
The development of the master plan is aimed at ensuring effective oversight over the department and ensuring implementation of water policy, while allowing for decisive decision-making when it comes to the scarce commodity.
“While the committee accepts that the process towards attaining a comprehensive master plan might take time, the work towards achieving this must be visible and tangible,” committee chairperson Mlungisi Johnson said on Thursday, noting the need to review the draft and provide contributions aimed at producing a quality product.
The DWS expects to publish the final master plan at the end of 2018/19 financial year.
A clear plan, which is central to achieving equitable provision of quality water and sanitation, will enable effective oversight by the committee.
“This plan is a tool that will give life to the mantra water is life, sanitation is dignity,” he concluded.
