The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has assured that there will be enough vaccine doses for all in the sector, with more than 105 000 people having been vaccinated in seven provinces in the first two days of the roll-out.

The basic education sector identified 582 000 educators and staff who are expected to be vaccinated by July 8.

Acting Health Minister Mamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane announced on Thursday that 1.2-million doses of the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine have arrived in the country and will need to be used by August 11.

When the vaccination programme began on Wednesday, the Department of Health recorded that 49 776 educators and staff received the vaccines and on the second day 55 444 got their injections.

KwaZulu-Natal continues to lead with 32.1% of their target population vaccinated, Eastern Cape registered 21%, Free State 21.9%, Mpumalanga 26% and North West 22%.

It added that Northern Cape recorded 12% while Gauteng was at 11% as of Thursday. These patterns also mirror the trends in the general population.

The department expect the numbers of people vaccinated to increase significantly as Limpopo and the Western Cape kicked off their roll-out on Friday.
