Project Description
The project involves the construction and operation of the 108 MW run-of-river Dariali hydropower plant, on the Tergi river, in the Kazbegi municipality, near the Georgian/Russian border. Infrastructure facilities will be located on the right bank of the Tergi river, on the 7-km-long section between the Kuro and Khdis Tskali tributaries.
Construction of the low dam is planned near the village of Stepantsminda, on the Tergi river, at an elevation of 1 725 m. The powerhouse will be located 1.2 km away from Dariali border crossing point, at an elevation of between 1 325 m and 1 333 m.
The power plant will include an intake unit, a sand basin, a diversion pipeline, a surge tunnel entrance, a headrace tunnel, a surge tunnel, an underground pressure shaft, an underground power plant station, a tailrace tunnel and open substation.
Value
The total required investment for the project is estimated at $123-million.
Duration
Project commissioning is expected in 2015, with three months of trial operation.
Latest Developments
The environmental- and social-impact assessment was released in December 2013. The deadline for submitting comments is March 10, 2014. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is considering supporting the development, construction and operation of Dariali hydropower plant.
