DA uses salaries to donate R1.5m to Solidarity Fund
South Africa’s official opposition party the Democratic Alliance (DA) announced on Wednesday that it would donate R1.5-million to the Solidarity Fund to assist small businesses in distress during the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
President Cyril Ramaphosa established the Solidarity Fund to pull money together to fight Covid-19 and limit its economic effects on families. The fund has since raised more than R2-billion.
DA national spokesperson Solly Malatsi revealed that the party’s financial contribution to the fund was drawn from the salaries of the party’s public representatives.
“We took the decision as an organisation as part of our efforts to be proactive in our response and play a constructive role towards helping the country overcome this pandemic. The contributions are the aggregated contributions drawn from [salaries of the DA public representatives],” Malatsi said.
In addition to the financial contribution, the DA will distribute R200 000 worth of sanitisers to essential workers who are “at the forefront of keeping the economy functional and saving lives during this difficult time”.
Over and above the R1.5-million contribution, DA public representatives can also make additional financial contributions to the Solidarity Fund as individuals if they wish to do so, Malatsi said.
