Stellenbosch technology company CT Lab will deploy 1 300 Otello edge computing devices on State-owned power utility Eskom's grid to change how power is seen and managed on the grid, enabling full visibility of the power grid in real-time.

Visibility is becoming a deciding factor in the development of the grid, says CT Lab CEO and lead designer Willie van Wyk.

“Otello is developed for the South African grid, and our approach to the question of grid visibility is that processing power must be installed within the grid, not only at the control centre.

"The system represents three decades of research and development in power, power quality and grid compliance management,” he notes.

The Otello system has three parts; the first being the Linux-based edge computer, which is capable of monitoring more than 9 000 electrical parameters in real-time on the device.

The second component is the data management system, which uses a proprietary algorithm to stream electrical data to the cloud in near real-time. The third part is Otello's data visualisation platform, which provides clear, comprehensive information to engineers as it occurs.

Following a tender signed during the week of June 21, Eskom will be installing the 1 300 devices into a grid that already has 3 700 earlier model CT LAB power monitors.

Collectively, the project will deliver an integrated grid visibility system, monitoring the electrical dataset, CT Labs says.
