Service provider connects schools to fibre infrastructure
Internet services provider (ISP) Cool Ideas has connected 140 schools countrywide to a 1 GB superfast fibre line.
In partnership with fibre network provider Vumatel, the ISP first went live on the project at Parkhurst Primary in 2015.
Since then, three new partners, namely Mitchells Fibre, Octotel and Frogfoot, have joined the initiative, and 140 schools have been connected across Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban in the areas where the partner fibre network providers have a live presence, says Cool Ideas marketing hero Sivuyile Mkontwana.
Under the project, Cool Ideas funds the connectivity and data and remains responsible for any after-installation support, while the fibre network providers front the cost of installation and maintaining the fibre infrastructure.
Schools are supported through regular support channels for as long as the service is active with Cool Ideas, with any fibre infrastructure faults escalated to the relevant fibre provider.
“We are incredibly honoured to be part of the schools initiative and this project lies deep within our hearts as our corporate social initiative.”
As fibre networks expand, Cool Ideas plans to expand its connections to more Department of Education-registered primary and high schools.
“As the fibre roll-out spreads, we will see new areas benefiting from this service,” he says.
Vumatel, for example, is now rolling out in Polokwane, Sasolburg, Vosloorus and Soweto, with schools in these areas set to benefit from the initiative.
The schools are subject to a Cool Ideas vetting process, and, once approved, in exchange, the schools are asked to provide some marketing exposure in the suburb where the school is located and to extend the marketing to other schools seeking the same type of connectivity.
