Cesa calls for clarity on NDP implementation
While Consulting Engineers South Africa (Cesa) welcomed the National Development Plan (NDP) vision to provide long-term infrastructure, government had to provide clarity on how it would be implemented, CEO Graham Pirie said on Wednesday.
“We know the ‘what’, but now we want to know the ‘how’,” he said in a statement, adding that Cesa was “extremely disappointed” that the long-term goals of the NDP appeared to have been placed on hold.
“Let us see more action rather than talk, because these actions will boost business confidence in the country. We need policy certainty from the government,” he said.
Pirie’s comments came on the back of criticisms by Deputy Public Works Minister Jeremy Cronin at a recent public debate, that the NDP, which seeks to triple, in real terms, the 2010 size of the economy by 2030 and lower unemployment to 6%, was “impossible to implement”.
Pirie said that the comments by Cronin were “worrying”, as government had, in the State of the Nation Address, adopted the NDP as a roadmap with the aim of eliminating poverty and reducing inequality.
“Government cannot acknowledge that the NDP is a roadmap for tackling the problems of poverty, inequality and unemployment, and then remain silent on the matter. This is giving the wrong signal,” he commented.
“Political will is needed to enforce the plan, and it is critical that the same resolve and urgency that the country had in ensuring that 2010 infrastructure was delivered on time, is needed to accelerate the NDP going forward.”
