Construction to start on Springs Mall
Construction will soon start on the R850-million Springs Mall at Springs Eco Park on the East Rand, with the mall expected to open in 2016, shopping centre development and investment company Flanagan & Gerard Developments said earlier this week.
The 52 000 m2 regional mall would be developed and owned in a joint venture by Flanagan & Gerard, mall development company Blue Crane EcoMall and construction company Giuricich Brothers.
The mall would be located at the intersection of the N17 highway and R51/Wit road, and would be visible from up to 5 km to people travelling on the N17.
“Springs Mall at Springs Eco Park has all the ingredients for an exceptional retail development. It benefits from excellent location, access and visibility in a growing node inhabited by mostly aspirant and upmarket residents with robust spending power and little retail nearby,” Flanagan & Gerard executive director and founder Patrick Flanagan said.
Meanwhile, Blue Crane EcoMall’s Franco D’Arrigo pointed out that the Springs Mall was expected to create between 500 and 700 jobs during the construction phase, with another 1 200 to 1 500 sustainable jobs expected to be created after the mall opened.
The mall would also lead to Springs retaining between R300-million and R500-million in revenue that was currently being spent outside its borders and was expected to boost the Springs economy by R1.2-billion.
“We welcome investment that improves our economy, creates jobs and assists with fighting poverty. We strive to build a liveable city and we can only achieve this by working together with the private sector,” City of Ekurhuleni mayoral spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said.
