The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) has confirmed that construction of its new Deep Space Ground Station, at Matjiesfontein in the Karoo region of the Western Cape province, is on schedule and should be completed within the next 18 to 24 months. A project such as this requires the highest construction, engineering and quality standards and these are being met.

Matjiesfontein is SANSA’s second ground station, the first being the long-established complex at Hartebeesthoek, west of Pretoria, in Gauteng province. The Matjiesfontein ground station is fully funded by government, through the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation. Once completed, it will strengthen the country’s position in the global space sector and reinforce its participation in international space science programmes.

“The Matjiesfontein Deep Space Ground Station represents far more than critical national infrastructure,” highlighted SANSA CEO Humbulani Mudau. “It is an investment in South Africa’s scientific leadership, technological independence and future competitiveness within the global economy. While the facility strengthens our sovereign space capabilities, it will also create opportunities for skills development, innovation, education and economic participation for surrounding communities. Achieving this vision depends on strong partnerships with municipalities, local leadership and residents who are integral to the project’s success.”

One of those municipalities is Laingsburg. Mudau visited the town on Monday and briefed the municipal authorities, community representatives and other important stakeholders about the progress of the project and the social, economic and educational opportunities it is creating for the district.

The ground station will create long-term opportunities for local economic development, through skills development, science education, community infrastructure initiatives and participation in the country’s space sector. Inspiring young people, and in particular young women and girls, to enter careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation, is a particular focus.

In return, the municipal authorities pointed out that they already had experience with significant infrastructure projects. These included upgrades to the N1 road transport corridor and renewable-energy projects.

“Both SANSA and the municipality agreed that transparent and consistent engagement with local communities will remain essential throughout the construction phase,” reported SANSA. “Clear communication regarding employment opportunities, procurement processes and community benefits will help manage expectations, build trust and ensure that the project delivers meaningful and inclusive outcomes.”
