NYSE-listed Consol Energy has commissioned the coal preparation plant at its Itmann metallurgical coal mine, in West Virginia, and earlier shipped off the first coal from its new mine to customers.

In a statement, Consol reports that the preparation plant started operations in late September and that the first train of Itmann coal loaded and shipped in mid-October.

The mine is expected to achieve its full run rate production in the fourth quarter, when the third and final continuous miner section will ramp.

When fully operational, the Itmann No. 5 mine will produce 900 000 t/y of premium, low-vol metallurgical coking coal, serving the domestic and international steel markets.

The preparation plant has the processing capacity of about double the output of the Itmann mine, which provides additional upside for third party processing and blending.

The Itmann mine’s coking coal is diversifying Consol’s revenue and product mix, opening up new market opportunities around the world.

Consol has invested about $100-million in the development of the mine, preparation plant, and surrounding infrastructure. It has also given a boost to the economy of southern West Virginia, creating about 175 long-term and high-paying jobs, notes president and CEO Jimmy Brock.

In a company statement, Senator Joe Manchin is quoted as saying that the new Itmann coal mine will be “tremendously helpful in producing the metallurgical coal we need for steel production, which will enable us to tackle supply chain issues, reduce inflation and meet the growing demand for steel needed to realize the benefits of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act”.
