Competition Commission investigates Investchem, Akulu Marchon
The Competition Commission hoped to determine whether or not Investchem and Akulu Marchon were party to collusive behaviour after raids were conducted at their respective offices in Kempton Park this week.
The search and seizures undertaken at the surfactant products manufacturers and suppliers formed part of the commission’s ongoing investigation into alleged collusive conduct in the market for the production and supply of a range of surfactant products used as input materials in the manufacture of blended household detergents, cosmetics and toiletry products.
“The commission has reasonable grounds to believe [that], from about 2003, the parties held meetings and agreed to fix the prices for surfactants and allocated customers between each other,” Commissioner Tembinkosi Bonakele explained, adding that it was believed that this was ongoing.
The commission, which acted on North Gauteng High Court-obtained warrants, seized documents and electronic data to be analysed along with other information gathered to determine whether the Competition Act had been contravened.
Surfactants included chemical products such as sulphuric acid, ether sulphate and sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, which could be found in dishwashing liquids, soaps and car cleaning products.
